Antonia Brown

Antonia Brown is a visual artist living between Cape Town and Brussels. Her artistic practice investigates how plants have been sought out across cultural history in search of healing, fertility or intoxication. Antonia sees the movement of plants as intended acts of dislocation and erasure. Throughout her sculptures, she approaches plants as containers for particular histories.

During her residency, Antonia will expand on the notion of sympathy as a methodology in terms of both research and production. With sympathy comes a level of distortion, through which Antonia intends to find a position of hyper presence (as opposed to critical distance). Using sympathy, she intends explore the work of two female medieval mystics, looking specifically to certain notions of pain and pain inducing practices.

Antonia (1989, South Africa) holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and a MA in Fine Arts from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. She has participated in various art residencies including Fondazione Ratti, Como in 2016 and Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris in 2017. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Martienssen Prize and the Newwork Prize in 2014. Her work has recently been shown at Fitzpatrick Gallery and Galerie Derouillon (Paris), Hinterconti (Hamburg) and 10n (Brussels), all in 2022.
